Words have meaning. Sometimes even the small ones by their inclusion or omission can have a huge impact. Most readers in their first glance at the title of this article thought the word “the” was mistakenly dropped from in front of Ukraine. Over the last century, we have become used to referring the nation of Ukraine as “the Ukraine.” This writer has been guilty of the mistake, even in recent writings.

The inclusion or omission of an article of speech like “the” conveys the difference between a sovereign, independent nation of Ukraine and a region or territory claimed by Russia and the Soviet Union. Certainly, Vladimir Putin wants us to keep using “the” when referring to Ukraine, especially when he has invaded its sovereign territory.

But there are words Putin does not want us to use either. “Holodomor” is one of those words. The term Holodomor derives from Ukrainian words referring to death or execution by starvation. It is a word for the genocide of the Ukrainian people that has remained buried behind a massive wall of Soviet propaganda and western under-reporting for over 80 years.

During the years of Soviet domination of Russia and Eastern Europe, the Kremlin did its best to bury the truth of the Holodomor and its role in implementing it.  Thanks to laudatory stories of Stalin’s Soviet Union written by New York Times reporter Walter Duranty during Stalin’s reign of terror, and the work of Soviet spies like Alger Hiss (a senior State Department official under President Franklin Roosevelt), the atrocities committed
against the people of Ukraine by the Soviets have never been widely publicized in the west.

In 1932 -1933, during Stalin’s Holodomor, approximately 25% of the Ukrainian nation was starved to death on a grand scale. Through systematic Soviet theft of all the grain from the farmers, to include the seed grain stores, in an area known as “the bread basket of Europe,” resistance to the Soviet seizure of independent farms in Ukraine was crushed. The Communist Party and the NKVD implemented  the murder of over 8 million Ukrainians during this period.

1933: Corpses of Famine Victims on the streets. Child Victim of Famine

Ukrainians were dying at the rate of 25,000 a day, more than half were children.   In the end, up to 10 million starved to death.  Stalin denied to the world that there is any famine in Ukraine, and prevented international aid from entering the country.(Kharkiv, Ukraine) order clomid from india

Stalin made extensive use of  the NKVD (previously known as the Checka and OGPU, later known as the KGB, today referred to as the FSB ) in seizing grain stores and shooting any farmers who hid grain to plant or feed their families.  Stalin’s proletarian socialist (Communist) genocide of the Holodomor and Gulag system was in full swing, and served as the model for Hitler’s Nationalist Socialist (Nazi) concentration camp system and “Final Solution” when it was just beginning. The very real Holocaust of the Holodomor in Ukraine was perpetrated by the same organization which gave birth to Vladimir Putin’s career.

The world turned a blind eye in witness to the Ukrainians who had their churches destroyed and many of their family members (often their entire families) starved to death on their farms, or executed if they tried to leave in search of food. The Soviets were all too happy to allow the horrific images of the Nazi death camps and testimonies of the Nuremberg Trials to obscure the suppressed truth of the Holodomor.

It is important for the world to recognize and stand with Ukrainian defiance against domination from post-Soviet Russia. The same organizations and philosophical rationalizations for domination which existed in Stalin’s Russia are alive and well in Putin’s; they just have different names.  – In which case, perhaps, words have no meaning.

NOTE TO READERS:

I had to make a correction to this article as I mistakenly wrote that Khrushchev was Stalin’s point man during the Holodomor in 1932-33. I wrote this from memory and my time line was off. Khrushchev was a senior party member in the Ukraine in the late 1920s. In 1929 he followed his mentor Kaganovich to Moscow where he was very active in helping Stalin purge the Moscow party leadership beginning around 1934, and returned to the Ukraine as party chief in 1937. I should have gone back and checked before publishing. Going back to the Black Book of Communism, the Great Terror occurred from 1936-1938 and Khrushchev was the point  man in the purge of the local communist party leaders in the Ukraine — in essence ensuring the executions of the executioners from the Holodomor, a very Soviet means of erasing evidence of atrocities. The Holodomor was part of the collectivization of farms (1932-33). I apologize for my inattention in my research.

This past week I took my kids to see the second movie in the Hunger Games trilogy, order clomid over the counter.  While it is a violent series, I cannot think of a better movie or book series to open the door to moral and political discussions
with our teen and preteen kids.

For those unfamiliar with the Hunger Games, it is the story of a gladiatorial competition in a futuristic totalitarian regime, which requires each of 12 isolated districts to select a teenage boy and girl by lottery to fight to the death until only one “victor” survives. The story centers on the heroine, Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers for the Hunger Games to save her younger sister, Prim, when her name is drawn. At the start of the Games, the evil President Snow tells the people that the games are a reminder of the futility and immorality of “resisting the Capital.” The first two movies of the series are very true to the books. They introduce concepts of justifiable (self defense and defense of others) and unjustifiable homicide and war. They unlock thoughts on the kinds of totalitarian regimes which would perpetrate such horrific crimes against their people. As the story unfolds, symbols of freedom and unity emerge from acts of love and compassion in the face of evil, just as they do in real life.

Unlike so many movies in which the characters engage in gratuitous violence strictly for entertainment’s sake, the Hunger Games series does not. This may sound like an odd statement given the gargantuan levels of gladiatorial
combat Katniss engages in. But in her struggle to survive her first and supposedly only round in the Hunger Games, Katniss makes moral decisions which raise her above the games and elevate her to a popular symbol of defiance to
totalitarianism.

Katniss’s first moral action is one of sacrifice when she volunteers for her younger sister.  In the games she befriends Rue, a young teen from another district who reminds her of Prim. They help protect each other from the professional gladiators from other districts until Rue is killed by one of the “pros.” Katniss also forms alliance with Peeta, the boy from her district who is in love with her, and they follow the same pattern of defending each other from the “pros.”

Throughout the Games, every act of violence Katniss engages in is in self defense or in defense of others. In their final act of defiance, Peeta and Katniss vow to take poison berries and sacrifice themselves for each other, rather than allowing the other to be killed so that only one of them survives.

Many of the symbols of resistance rise from these actions in the purchase clomid uk and come to fruition in Catching Fire. Before she departs for the Capital for the first games, Prim gives Katniss a small pin bearing a mocking jay. (The mocking jay is a genetically modified bird which the regime created to spy on the rebels during the previous revolution. It is able to remember and mimic long conversations, but the rebels quickly learned to fill the mocking
jays heads with conversations full of false information.) The mocking jay pin, along with Katniss’s hair style, becomes a popular icon. Then there is the tune Rue whistles and sends through the mocking jays in the arena as a signal to
Katniss. It becomes a musical symbol of resistance. Finally, there is the simple blowing of a kiss with a three fingered gesture Katniss makes as she bids farewell to Rue’s body as it is lifted from the arena.  This small expression of love, becomes an act of defiance so challenging to the regime that it earns people immediate executions for its display. In Catching Fire, Katniss becomes the human embodiment of all these symbols and they serve to unite the peoples of the various districts in resistance to the Capital.

There are many true to life correlations in these movies. In order clomid over the counter, the character Cinna, Katniss’s wardrobe designer, earns a terrible fate for a dress that turns Katniss into the Mocking Jay. A similar thing happened in East
Berlin in the late 1960s. The divided city of Berlin became a symbol and show case of the capitalist system of the west and the communism imposed by the Soviet Union. In the years immediately following the destruction of the city in
World War II, the US, British, and French controlled sectors of West Berlin quickly rebuilt and became a show case for a modern and vibrant European city with brightly lit thoroughfares and skyscrapers. Soviet controlled East Berlin, on the other hand, remained pockmarked and skeletal with the exception of a few city blocks near the Brandenburg gate. Things were so bad, the Soviets had to build a wall around the western sector to keep all the people from leaving East Germany. In the 1960’s, in an attempt to build a modern symbol to serve as a propaganda counter weight for the overwhelming economic success of capitalism contrasted to the dismal misery of communism, the communist leader of East Germany, Walter Ulbricht ordered the construction of a television tower that would be the purchase clomid The story circulating in the diplomatic community in Bonn in 1982 was that the designer had only agreed to build it if he could put a cross on top of the nearly 1200 foot tower. The communists agreed to allow a half meter (18 in) cross on top. After some reluctance, the designer agreed and the tower was constructed. However, when the sun reflected off the mirrored ball in the middle of tower, it produced a very prominent cross that could be seen for miles. The story concluded with designer getting seven years in prison.

Defiance in the face of tyranny can take many forms.

A simple musical tune can also have great impact.  Dr John Lenczowoski, who served as the Soviet and East European Desk Chair in the Reagan Administration and was one of the architects who helped bring about the dissolution of the Soviet Union, led the effort to upgrade the crumbling infrastructure of Radio Free Europe and Voice of America broadcasting into the former Warsaw Pact countries in the early 1980s. He tells of the power of a single song for people who feel isolated and alone under the weight of political oppression. A Polish gentleman once recounted to him how he boarded a bus in the early 80’s while whistling a tune. He was not thinking much about the tune itself, nor what was going on around him. He paused in a brief moment of terror as other people around him on the bus began whistling the tune also. The tune could only be heard on Radio Free Europe and Voice of America. It was forbidden from broadcasts on Soviet approved radio and he feared that he had exposed himself to arrest for anti-Soviet activities.  But as the whistling spread throughout the bus, he realized that the other passengers were of a similar
mindset and that he was not alone. In that moment, hope caught fire for a group of strangers riding a bus.

Then there are the real life acts of defiance in the face of violence. Some are successful. Such as when the young Bishop of Krakow, purchase clomid over counter faced down the water cannons, truncheons, and guns of the secret police as he began a tradition of holding an outdoor Midnight Mass in the “communist paradise” of Nowa Huta in 1959.  He later succeeded in having a church built for the parishioners. He essentially became Poland’s version of the Mocking Jay when he was elected Pope and took the name John Paul II.  His rise to the Papacy stood in direct defiance to the attempts of the Soviet regime to exercise domination over the Church and the peoples of Eastern Europe and was a major factor in the end of Soviet rule.

Other acts of  defiance fail, leaving only images of their hope and bravery. Such was the fate of the Chinese students crushed by the tanks of the Peoples Liberation Army in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

True bravery in the face of oppression: A young man armed only with a brief case in Tiananmen Square attempts to block tanks from crushing the student protests in 1989. Several protesters were ground into the pavement under the treads of the tanks, manywere shot, and many thousands were sent to the laojiao (Chinese concentration camp system) for “re-education.”   Photo from:http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=tiananmen+square+protests&id=C052BF633C1B522E06E390E95266D50CD69FC9E4&FORM=IQFRBA#view=detail&id=BFD9254EA7E318ED3126E949FD4FB923F75595B2&selectedIndex=1

The great thing about the Hunger Games series is the correlation the moral issues and symbols from this science fiction story have to real life issues in the study of history and current events from the Roman Empire to modern day totalitarian regimes.  The series provides a means to introduce the real meaning of political and moral principles to teens and preteens as they start to become politically aware. It is a teaching tool to make them aware of the levels of anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, and anti-family symbolism which they are bombarded with everyday. It provides the perfect vehicle to help your young teen understand the very real existence of evil regimes in which families are property of the government and governments use children to punish and threaten the parents. It opens them to viewing and understanding documentaries like purchase clomid 50mg about North Korea.

The Hunger Games series provides a great inroad to getting our children to think about the Source of human and individual rights, and to determine when support for or resistance to government authority is justified. It can be used to lead them to a meaningful and thoughtful reading of our nation’s founding documents and a truer understanding of what freedom really means. Perhaps in a generation of students inundated with political correctness from kindergarten through their current grade, a new spirit of Liberty will start catching fire.

As I type my thoughts for this coming Memorial Day, it is my
prayer they are worthy of surviving the flurry of other current events and will
have an impact on those who read them and perhaps, will be referred to on other
occasions and perhaps help drive the remembrance on future Memorial Days.

I always experience a bit of dread as I ponder how to say
something of relevance that goes beyond the standard “honoring those who gave
all for our freedom” which gets circulated by so many writers while so many
Americans head to the beach or prepare for a barbeque.  This is a day dedicated to the memory of those
who gave all, but it is so often lost on those who did not know them.  There are far too many people who do not know
the sacrifices of our military. Even worse, they do not know why America is
worth sacrificing for because it is no longer taught in our schools.

In his book “Who Are We?” Samuel Huntington notes that
America’s sense of self is a continuous development.  Throughout the 19th and into the
early 20th century, the majority of Americans viewed themselves as
being of their local or state community or the ethnic group from which they, or
their parents, immigrated.  The sense of
being “American” did not truly coalesce until the 1920s after many of the
returning veterans of the Great War joined the efforts of the veterans of the
Civil War and Spanish-American War in pushing for school curriculums which
taught the uniqueness and exceptionalism of the United States, the history of
its founding, and struggle and price to maintain its freedoms.  The fruit of their efforts continued into my
primary and high school education in the late 1960s and through the 1970’s.  Of course, it is thanks to the radicals of
the 1960s and 70’s who are now writing the curriculums that our kids are
currently studying, denigrating what is great about America and highlighting
its flaws, that so many are cynical about the sacrifices this day commemorates.

This is the mission that we veterans must now
undertake.  We must fight on the local
and state levels to ensure the curriculums in our public schools teach what is
unique and great about our country.  We
must tell the stories of the heroes of our founding and struggles for freedom.  As importantly, we must tell the stories of
the heroes we served with.  For it is
their sacrifices, the sacrifices of the once living and breathing people we
knew, which give real life meaning to the ideas for which they died.  No matter how hard it may be, get out and tell
the stories of those whose blood stained your hands after they took an
unexpected round or blast.  Tell the
stories of those whose last breath you witnessed.  But don’t just tell how they died.  Tell how they lived, what they accomplished,
and what lived on because of their sacrifices.

Tell them about Captain Humayun Kahn, the Base Force
Protection Officer at Forward Operating Base Iron Horse at Baqubah, Iraq.
He gave his life preventing a car bomb
from entering the base.  He was at the
gate that morning checking on the progress of its construction and its entry
procedures.  His work in the previous six
weeks had transformed the gate from one easily crashed through by a vehicle
into one that held that car bomb outside the gate and forced the driver to
detonate the 500 lbs of explosives there instead of the dining facility as it
served breakfast to well over 100 Soldiers.  CPT Kahn was the only American Soldier killed
in that bombing.

Tell them about Command Sergeant Major Steve Faulkenburg, the
quintessential grizzled veteran and senior NCO of the 2-2 Infantry
Ramrods.  Tough as nails, he often walked
with a painful limp from too many parachute drops and too many miles under a
rucksack.  He was responsible for ensuring
individual training of the hundreds of Soldiers and their NCO leadership at all
levels of his battalion.  His was the
first name reported to my station in the 1st Marine Division operations
center during the Battle of Fallujah in November 2004.  I had shaken his hand just a few hours before
at the rehearsal and wished him well in the fight.  He died leading his troops from the front as
they crossed the breach into the city on the first night of the battle.

Also include Captain Sean Sims, a young company commander,
who died as he moved on foot with his forward air controller team (all four of
the Air Force’s forward air controller element attached to the Ramrods were
wounded in the battle) into a building to get a better look at the battle so
that they could get the air support effectively on target.  His wife received his posthumous Silver Star.  His executive officer, 1st
Lieutenant Ed Ewan was also killed when he absorbed the brunt of the explosion
of an RPG anti-tank round while in the turret of his Bradley Fighting Vehicle
helping to direct the actions of his company in the fight.  Both of these officers were killed while leading
from the front, exposing themselves to the dangers of the battle field – all in
the name of keeping their Soldiers alive.

The one First Infantry Division Soldier who also gave his
life at Fallujah, whom I did not have the chance to meet personally, was SSG
James Matteson a squad leader from the Brigade Reconnaissance Company.  A couple of his soldiers told me how he had
died, also leading from the front, when hit by an RPG round while manning the
gun in the turret of his up armored HMMWV (Hummer).

Just as SSG Matteson’s Soldiers told this Major from the
division staff about how much they respected and admired their squad leader, so
too must the veterans who read this share the stories of the heroes they served
with in unpronounceable places in all parts of the planet.  It has been said that sacrifice without
remembrance is wasted.  Veterans must
ensure the memories of those who gave so much are not forgotten.  We must work to ensure that current and
future generations learn what is unique and special about America and the men
and women who gave all in its service.  Those
of us who have the good fortune to share the rest of our lives with our
families and communities must ensure they know the price paid for their
freedoms by people whom they will not know.

We must tell their stories.

Be Aware & Prepared http://wordpress.williamrussell.net/?p=20 http://wordpress.williamrussell.net/?p=20#comments Thu, 02 May 2013 18:10:15 +0000 http://wordpress.williamrussell.net/?p=20 As the fallout from the Boston bombing continues, Americans are coming to terms with the realities of the terrorist threats we are facing in our country. Part of this is adopting a prepared mindset to meet the threats where they occur.
The Chechens are here. So are Muslims from Dagestan, Albania, and Bosnia. Much has been made in the press about the more Caucasian look of the Tsarnaev brothers. But what sets the radicalized segments of these ethnic groups apart from their Middle Eastern counterparts, is not so much the racial aspects of their ethnicities, but the way they fight. While most are more than willing to fight to the death to avoid capture, and will kill you in a heartbeat, they are not so willing to die easily. They don’t like to waste their hard earned Jihadi talents by blowing themselves up in the middle of a random crowd. They prefer to inflict maximum harm on the “Kafirs” (infidels) and to live to do it again and again. They work very hard to ensure they live to kill more on another day.
Most American Soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan recognize the Chechen Jihadis as the most dangerous fighters of all the enemies we faced there. They were the toughest, most disciplined, and brutal. One only has to do an internet search for and watch the video of the execution of an unknown Russian soldier, or look at the pictures of the Beslan School massacre to come face to face with the reality of how profanely brutal they can be. Most  American
Soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan recognize the Chechen Jihadis as
the most  dangerous fighters of all the
enemies we faced there. They were the toughest, most disciplined, and brutal. One
only has to do an internet search for and watch the video of the execution
of an unknown Russian soldier,  or look
at the pictures of the Beslan School massacre to come face to face with the
reality of how profanely brutal they can be.  [1]

There is much discussion about how the United States should
deal with the dynamics of the “new” terrorism threat the Boston Marathon bombing heralds. While there is a key role for the federal, state, and local
law enforcement, as well as the intelligence communities to play, the reality
is they cannot be everywhere at once.

I will never forget the feeling of vulnerability I had for
the thousands upon thousands of people stuck in the forty mile long parking lot
that had been I-95/ I-395, as I rode my motorcycle up the break-down lane on my
way back into the Pentagon in the early morning hours of September 12, 2001.  I had visions of multiple shooters conducting armed
attacks against the many unarmed commuters who were stationary targets in their
vehicles on that morning and the week that followed.  My fear was based on the attack just 20 miles
away and nine years earlier by Pakistani Muslim, Mir Qazi, at Langley, Virginia.
Mr Qazi murdered  two and wounded three other
CIA employees as they sat in their cars at a traffic light .

Since 9/11, we have seen the attacks against tourists in
Mumbai,  school children in Beslan,
apartment dwellers in Moscow, train passengers in Spain, commuters in London, car bomb
attacks in Mexico near the US border, and one Muslim Army Doctor who turned on
his fellow Soldiers at Ft Hood.

The Boston Marathon bombing occurred at time and place where
there were many police agencies and emergency medical personnel present. They
quickly secured the scene and treated the wounded after the attack. It was the
brave and well executed efforts of those personnel which ensured everyone who
made it to the hospital alive, survived – an unprecedented emergency medical
accomplishment.

But the attack also demonstrated that law enforcement cannot
fully reduce all vulnerabilities to terrorism at large public venues. The
bombing  was only a “simple” attack with several
bombs. What if it had been a complex attack followed up by shooters or successfully synchronized
secondary devices timed to go off in the immediate vicinity as the first responders
rushed to aid the wounded?

In other venues,  imagine
if Adam Landza or James Holmes had been accompanied by additional Jihadis when
they shot up their school and movie theater.

In spite of the great efforts on the part of non-politically
appointed career law enforcement and intelligence officials, our federal and
local efforts to protect the American people from harm are limited. They are greatly
hampered and undercut by the corruption, incompetence, and political “divide and
conquer” mentality of the Obama Administration – an Administration more concerned
with the sexuality of a professional basketball player and the “radicalism” of
the TEA Party, than with the protection of our borders and citizens from the
very real Islamist threats.

 It is not a question
of “if?” but “when?” the next attack will occur. It will be at a time and place
where any number of vulnerabilities exist, and quite likely without a
significant armed police presence and a multitude of emergency medical
personnel on hand.

As Americans, we need to be prepared to defend ourselves, our
loved ones, and our neighbors from attacks. There is no substitute for the response
time of an armed, concealed carrying citizen to shooting incidents.  One armed citizen can make all the difference
in the world, as Charl van Wyk did with a .38 revolver when he put a stop to an
attack by four terrorists armed with grenades and automatic weapons in the 1993
St James Church massacre in South Africa.
If you cannot carry concealed, the availability of a securely stored rifle,
handgun, or shotgun, accessible in 30 to 90 seconds from a vehicle or office,  is infinitely better than no weapons at all.

We also need to be prepared to perform first aid until the
arrival of trained medical personnel.  Even
the most ardent pacifists can be convinced to be prepared to save a life by clearing
an airway, stopping arterial bleeding with a pressure bandage or tourniquet,
and stabilizing the c-spine following an attack.

America, we do not need to be paranoid. We need to be aware
and prepared. Any high-visibility public event can be a target of terrorists.
We need to meet this reality head-on.

liberal media establishment.  Please view the video in the below listed
link as Admiral James Lyons, Jr. USNA ’52 USN (Ret), former
Commander-in-Chief of the US Pacific Fleet, explains what sequestration
will mean to the US Navy; it will result in having less ships in the
entire US Fleet that the US Navy had before World War I——and less US
Navy ships than Admiral Lyons had in the US Pacific Fleet, when it was
under his command.   Sequestration will not only unilaterally decrease
the capability of the US Navy; it will also unilaterally decrease the
capability of each of the other service branches.  The American people
should ask themselves why the Commander-in-Chief is unilaterally
decreasing the capabilities of the US Armed Forces in face of the
serious increasing threats facing the nation from China, Russia, Iran,
and Islamic Terrorists.”

The reasoning posted below remains valid, and is currently playing out in the Marine Corps testing and integration of women into the Infantry Officer’s training.

There is a new lawsuit the federal courts demanding all exclusions
barring women from ground combat positions be dropped in the name of
equal opportunity. This would be a great mistake. We have achieved the
right balance of opportunities for women and the requirement to maintain
certain sex-based exclusions to meet our national interests.

Women,
such as General Ann Dunwoody, are commanding at the highest levels and
serving effectively in many combat, combat related, and intelligence
related roles. There are many brave women who are flying combat missions
and out on patrols in Military Police, Civil Affairs, and Intelligence
roles alongside the Infantry in Afghanistan and throughout the Middle
East.  When working with the Infantry, they are performing
roles that men are incapable of in those cultures to gather critical
intelligence and provide inroads through healthcare and education to the
veiled half of those societies.  These women have proven
themselves more than capable of defending themselves when attacked. To
date, two women have been awarded Silver Stars for bravery under fire
while defending their units in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But
there are realities of warfare that remain the same as they have
throughout history, and there are certain types of units that must
remain all male.  While there are some very physically fit
women who can outperform the average man at endurance and strength
tests, they are the rare exceptions to the rule. When it comes to the
pure applications of “brute force and ignorance” that goes along with
closing with and killing other men who are actively trying to kill you,
under conditions which require physical exertions  that exceed those of any NFL game, men are simply more suited to the occasion.  The reality is far different from what Hollywood portrays in the movies.

Imagine if our sense of political correctness required that 20 percent of one NFL team’s starting lineup include women.  It
would fundamentally change the game. The effects on the capabilities of
our ground combat units would be no less than the effects such a move
would have on a professional sports team. But the cost would be much
higher.

There are physical differences between men and women that no amount of social engineering can overcome.  The
starkest example I can think of goes back to my college judo team. We
had the best women’s college player in the nation on our team. But she
could not throw most of the men she practiced with.  I
remember seeing her pinned once in a free play by a smaller man who had
just joined the team and whose only grappling training was in a required
PE wrestling class.

This
truth of physical strength in martial endeavors applies when carrying
70 to 100 lbs of gear up the side of a mountain at 10,000 feet above sea
level to root Al Qaeda members out of caves, when repairing the 3 ton
track of an M1 tank in the snow, and to all the tasks related to the
movement and operation of a field artillery piece or other heavy armored
vehicles.

Then
there are the political realities of implementation which are
completely ignored by those advocating the removal of the combat
exclusions.  The most important is that it will make women
subject to the draft. Without the exclusion, there is no legal
justification to drafting only men into military service.

 All
those arguing for this, need to consider the NFL analogy again. While
they might argue that women should be allowed to play in the NFL if they
could meet the standards, do they really want to make the argument that
an NFL team must make a quota and implement different strength and
speed standards for those women who want to play, but are not quite as
strong and fast as the male players? Do they really want to make the
argument that women should be called up and forced to play on that NFL
team?  Would they then expect that team to win, when it plays against teams which do not have those requirements?

Once
the barrier preventing women from voluntarily serving in the Infantry
is removed, there will be no legal barrier to preventing them from being
forced to serve in the Infantry. Is this what our country wants?

Until four years ago, I would not have
been so concerned about the VA making a medical mental competency call
on an individual veteran being treated for mental health issues.  Certainly, no one in their right mind would argue that the mentally incompetent should own guns.  Also,
the vast majority of the people who work for the bureaucratic
organization known as the VA are professionals and are concerned for the
veterans they care for. But the issue of competency becomes an issue
because the VA is a bureaucracy, and a political one at that.

Every man and woman who enlists in our
military services raises their right hand and swears to support and
defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies,
foreign and domestic.  When they become citizen-guardians
of the Constitution, they sign blank checks with their lives and
subordinate some of their Constitutional rights to the good order and
disciple of the military, which is necessary to complete that mission.  Specifically,
they give up their rights to free political speech, submit to random
search and seizure of their personal property (especially when living in
the barracks or on board a ship), and relinquish their right to posses
and control their personally owned weapons when living on military
installations.  While most will leave military service
after their initial enlistment, they continue to up hold their oaths as
life-long commitments as they continue their lives as civilians with the
full rights to free speech and gun ownership that all citizens enjoy.

There are well meaning efforts to
highlight the challenges of those veterans who suffer because of the
wounds or stresses they endured when they went into harm’s way on our
nation’s behalf. But all too often it becomes a political stiletto that
is used to back-stab veterans in the political arena while professing to
promote their causes.  There is an underlying political
narrative being used by the Democrats and the Administration which
serves undermine the political credibility of veterans. It is a
narrative in which most veterans’ simple desire for a bit of gratitude,
is answered with condescending pity from those whom they have protected.  It
is one which highlights traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and post
traumatic stress (PTSD). It visualizes all veterans as having been
traumatized to the point that any expression of passion for the oath
they took and the causes they served as due to post traumatic stress;
one that portrays veterans as “loved but unstable.” This is a narrative
which seeks to marginalize veterans politically, and disarm them
literally.

Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein has led this narrative.  Ever
since she took to the airwaves and blamed the murders of San Francisco
Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk on their murder’s
service in Vietnam in 1978, she has continued her crusade against gun
ownership, especially semiautomatic weapons.

Fortunately and despite all the
political and media attention given to TBI and PTSD rates among service
members and veterans, the crime and suicide rates among combat veterans
are much lower than the rates for the same age, sex, and social
demographics of the general population.  Yet, veterans who
have sacrificed for this nation, have the bar lowered for the
infringement of their rights after they leave military service, and are
portrayed as somehow being less grounded and stable for political
viewpoints and gun ownership than their civilian counterparts who have
not served.

An article in the Wall Street Journal
following the Gabby Giffords mass shooting, reports that all other
citizens require court adjudication to be declared mentally incompetent,
with a total of 1.1 million people currently on the NICS mentally unfit
list. This means that the 100,000 people currently banned from gun
ownership by VA injunction mentioned by the Brady Center in the
Washington Times article, account for a large portion of those banned in
the NICS.  This demonstrates that veterans are much more
likely to be reported in NICS and banned from gun ownership for mental
incapacity than those who have not served. The problem is not that
mentally unfit veterans are on the list, but that they are placed there
by bureaucrats against whom they have no independent appeal.

This is very worrisome because
President Obama and his administration cannot be depended upon to defend
the Constitutional rights of Veterans any more than they could be to
defend the voting rights of our Active Duty personnel who are deployed.
The Department of Defense under the leadership of Defense Secretary
Panetta, paid minimal lip service to ensuring the voting rights of our
deployed Service Members in the last election.  Many
absentee ballots for those in Afghanistan were destroyed in a plane
crash. There was also a very lack-luster effort on the part of the
Defense Department to get deployed Soldiers to register for their
absentee ballots and to get those ballots to them, in spite of the legal
requirements to do so. Then, the President went beyond simply failing
in defending the rights of Service Members to vote, and engaged in
active suppression of those rights. President Obama’s re-election
campaign sued to eliminate the three day extension on absentee and early
voting for members of military in Ohio.  Is the VA any less subject to political manipulation by the Administration than the Defense Department?

 What is to prevent
Obama’s Veterans Administration from implementing a rule requiring every
Purple Heart recipient to pass a “mental competency” test before being
allowed to own weapons? What is to prevent the VA from extending that
competency test to any Veteran who has served in a combat zone, because
they might have PTSD?  What is to prevent this
Administration and the political bureaucracy of the VA from
cross-referencing that competency test with a list of known Oath Keepers
or other political test?

There is a very telling scene in the
movie “The Last Emperor.” The young Emperor of China returns to
Manchuria in 1935 to find his palace guards disarmed and Japanese
appointed ministers in control of his government. buy clomid and nolva
Most Americans are not used to thinking such a scene could have
relevance to the United States because we are a Constitutional Republic
whose citizens have an active role in governing and protecting our form
of government. But there seems to be an active Democratic effort to
marginalize and disarm the sworn guardians of our Republic.

This is why it is so important for the
Congress to prevent the Veterans Administration (VA) from unilaterally
ruling individual veterans mentally incompetent to own guns.  This
is where Senator Coburn, Congressional leaders, and the American people
must continue the fight to protect the Constitutional rights of our
veterans, so that they will always remain the sworn citizen-guardians of
our Constitution.

Everyone should be appalled at the killings which occurred in
Connecticut yesterday. There is nothing more evil than a person who
would harm innocent children – whether out of hate for an individual or
group, or for an ideology. A prayer for the victims and mourning
families is the appropriate first response.  The second response should be to make sure it never happens again.

There
is no question that firearms were involved. We will all learn more
about the types of weapons, how they were used, and when and where they
were purchased.  But less than 24 hours after the attack on
the kindergarten class the battle lines for the fight over gun control
and gun rights are being drawn. The mayors of New York, Boston, Seattle,
and the Governor of New York are demanding national level action from
the President to implement control over guns. Film maker Michael Moore
was quoted in a tweet of
“The
NRA hates freedom. They don’t want you to have the freedom to send your
children to school & expect them to come home alive.”
 President
Obama’s tearful press conference yesterday signaled his emotional
intent to support any and all measures to take guns out of the hands of
law abiding citizens.

Gun
owners and rights advocates have been countering on websites, citing
the same day school attack in China in which an assailant stabbed 22
children with a knife, or where to quickly stock up on ammo and
discussions about what point they are willing to go to before they give
up their guns.

One
of the things gun owners and gun rights advocates have to accept is
that the emotional arguments over protecting children will always beat
out any argument about a right to own guns. The images of parents
grieving for their lifeless children will always trump any statistical
argument on crime or gun ownership, as well as any argument involving
“cold dead hands” bravado.

As
the media ramps up for this fight, every effort will be made to show
gun owners as the emotional children in the argument, selfishly guarding
their dangerous toys. Gun owners and advocates need to learn to make
arguments which are both intellectual and emotional. We have to be able
to reach mothers and fathers who may be afraid of guns and make them
understand that gun owners are people who love their families and feel
the same fear of criminals and the carnage they havoc. We need to answer
with words and pictures conveying logic that speaks to the hearts of
those who fear guns. We need to help the sheep distinguish between the
wolves and the sheepdogs. — The sheep have a vote in whether the
sheepdogs are forced to wear muzzles and/or get defanged.

We
must recognize that we will be up against the professional film makers
of Hollywood who are experts at producing images which tug at the
emotional heart strings while mocking the values we hold dear. Rob
Reiner has been at this for over 40 years. Remember how Archie Bunker
was portrayed in the 1970’s arguing against gun control: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLjNJI54GMM.

The Gun Control arguments are coming:

We must use words which counter the Archie Bunker stereotype.  Here
are some decently worded arguments to convey that disarming law abiding
citizens is not the answer in a way that is less brash for
tenderhearted:

  • “As a father/mother and gun owner, I will never leave my
children unprotected. I will not give up my right to protect my family
in our home or on the street.”
  • “It is fine that you do not own a gun. Do not take away my right to protect my children.”
  • “Taking away my gun will only leave my children unprotected.”
  • “It took police XX minutes to respond to the school shooting. An
armed teacher or administrator could have responded in seconds.” (I
have not yet found a timeline verifying the first call to 911 and the
arrival of the first police officer in the Connecticut shooting. Based
on the reported delay/interruption in the school’s public address to
initiate the lock down system, my gut says the initial call probably did
not occur before the killer completed his spree and killed himself.)
  • “We all want to keep our children safe. But the police cannot be
everywhere. In the average mass shooter incident, when police respond
to mass shootings and end the situation, the average number of victims
killed is 14.3 and usually including the shooter’s suicide. When the
shooter encounters a concealed weapons carrier, the average is 2.3
innocent victims killed.” (See Rampage Statistics article below)

Please share any good arguments you may have in the comments section at the end of this posting.

Here
are some good posters I found around the web which get some of the
points across. I have included the url where I found them.  (One poster I
would love to see, but could not find, would show the choice of
responses in a school setting. One picture showing a teacher cowering in
the corner with her students and one with the teacher in a hide
position aiming at the shooter coming through the door, as well as one
showing multiple teachers securing/covering the hall way.)

As
of this writing, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has legislation on his
desk to authorize the arming of teachers and volunteers to protect their
schools. The teacher’s union is opposed to this bill. Let’s all hope he
signs it.

Here
are links to some good articles I came across in my research. (Yes,
Free Republic had the best selection of articles….just follow the links
they will get you to the original source materials.)

Originally posted 11/12/2012If you are thinking of running for office, this post is for you. I would like to share some of my experiences in a congressional campaign which drew national attention. I will be as informative as possible for those who are weighing a political run, especially those coming from military service.I will add additional subjects as I craft them. For now:

KNOW WHY YOU ARE RUNNINGcan i order clomid online

If you are thinking of running for office, the most important part of that decision is the “why” of what you are doing. Make sure your reasons are clear and unambiguous.

It is hard enough to take on this challenge if you have a strong reason and your spouse is on board. If you are running for ego or ambition, it will destroy your family and hurt the people you love. There are few things that could be worse than to lose an election after sacrificing your most precious relationships in the process. The grind of the campaign is harder on your family than just about any other endeavor you can undertake, including the separation of military deployments.

For those who have served in the military and been through the hardship of deployments, it is important to understand the difference. Unlike military deployments, your scheduling and the decision to leave the house in the evening to campaign is entirely YOURS. While spouses willingly accepted the interruption of their careers and the lonely nights of deployments with the constant supervision of the children and household while you were gone, there was generally an acceptance of the sacrifices because there was a shared hardship. But when you leave the house most days and nights over the course of a year or more to attend dinners, fun runs, fairs, and party events to make speeches and shake hands, the concept of shared sacrifice is much harder for your spouse to see.

For those who are coming out of military service, throw into that mix the reduction in income while you are campaigning, the loss of privacy for your family, the attacks on your integrity, and the sudden personal attacks against you, and even your spouse. There are major adjustments you and your family must make. While in uniform, most people assume you are a person of integrity whose family makes great sacrifices on their behalf — and they will tell you so. Once you put on a sport jacket or suit and start campaigning, many people automatically assume that you are lying scumbag who will say anything to get a vote and only wants to live high on the hog on the taxpayer’s dime – and they will tell you so.

On top of that assumption, understand that the opposition has people whose sole function in life is to get under your skin, make you look dishonest, mean, and stupid. The bigger the threat you are, the more underhanded they will become, even to the point of paying people to stalk you and your family. They will use the pieces of the truth to give their narrative validity. (Look at what happened to General Petraeus – he was not only a threat to the Obama story on Benghazi, but also the biggest threat to Hillary’s candidacy for President in 2016.)

Because I had not lived in the area when I left active duty to begin my  congressional race John Murtha in Pennsylvania, I was vulnerable to the “carpetbagger” label. But I knew I had hit the big time when Murtha brought in Bill Clinton to call me one. In the final days of the campaign Murtha ran commercials falsely accusing me of stealing $185,000 from my campaign and also mailed out flyers stating I did not live in Johnstown. Of course, the flyers I received were addressed to my home address in Johnstown.

But if you have something you see clearly and believe in very deeply, and your family is willing to make the financial and emotional sacrifices to fight for it, you can have a huge impact whether you win or lose.

Knowing and understanding your “why” will help you achieve milestone victories, even if the vote counts don’t go your way on election day. I obviously did not win the election of 2008. The fact that the vote totals against the 34 year incumbent (in the year of Democratic sweeps) were better than anyone had done in the previous 30 years, was not something to hang one’s hat on. The real victory was brought about on April 8, 2008 when my candidacy effectively silenced the leading critic of the Iraq War at the height of the “Surge.”

On April 8, 2008, General Petraeus was testifying on Capitol Hill. There was a huge push to end the Surge by Democratic leaders. Harry Reid declared the war in Iraq as “lost,” MOVEON.ORG had just run the General “Betrayus” advertisement, and Senator Hillary Clinton had just called the General a liar. Speaker of the House Pelosi was constantly shadowed by John Murtha, who was touted as the “combat Marine” who was speaking out against the war in Iraq and accusing the Haditha Marines of “murdering civilians in cold blood.”

In a chance interview on FOXNEWS Happing Now, I was able to effectively paint John Murtha as putting the United States Congress stamp of approval on enemy propaganda can you purchase clomid over the counter.  From that moment on, John Murtha did not publicly discuss the war in Iraq, nor the Haditha Marines unless he was specifically asked.  He stayed essentially silent on the issue until his final interview the week before his death in February 2010.

This chance interview, even though it did not any play beyond its original broadcast, had a huge impact on the political debate surrounding the war in Iraq.

Another big impact of the campaign against Murtha was that it forced him to campaign for the first time in over 30 years. Murtha’s seat was considered ultra safe, and he was always able to donate his campaign funds to other struggling congressional candidates. Not so in 2008. He had to spend over $1million in the final days of the campaign and required massive assistance from the  Democratic National Committee to save his seat. These were resources which could have turned other Republican seats to Democratic seats.

While I was not successful on election night of 2008, the national attention of the campaign, the easily disprovable lies that Murtha told, and the fundraising success my team had, set us up to win in 2010.

Unfortunately, Murtha passed away in February 2010, completely altering the political landscape and requiring a special election. This gave control of the situation to Murtha’s political and financial allies in the Pennsylvania Republican Committee, with whom I did not enjoy any favor. I addressed the outcome of the 2010 elections in clomid for sale online cheap.  The Chair of the Pennsylvania Republican Committee, Robert Gleason, withdrew his name from the running for the Republican National Committee Chairmanship within 15 hours of the publication of this article — another milestone of my political career.

Knowing “why” I was in the race made all the difference. Here is how I  explained my ”why” on my website when I left active duty with the Army and moved to Pennsylvania as I began my run against John Murtha in Pennsylvania in 2007:

“In my military career I have served six tours in hostile fire zones including Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the Balkans. These tours include almost three years in the Middle East (Iraq and Saudi Arabia) and a year and a half in the Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia,& Hungary). My wife, Kasia, who was pregnant with our son at the time, and I were also in the Pentagon on 9/11.

I grew up in the shadow of the US defeat in Vietnam. On an intellectual level, I have long understood that a war may be lost politically, in spite of military victories. On the emotional level, I came face to face with this and made the decision to make this run last March when I had the opportunity to meet with some of our Wounded Warriors during their visit to the Pentagon. I have always been impressed by the spirit and good cheer of so many of these wounded heroes but also understand the sullen responses from some. Seeing these Soldiers, Marines, and Airmen with missing and shattered limbs, two with missing eyes and wounded faces, I found myself wiping away the tears as I walked back to my office. I was both sadden and angered that the sacrifices these brave service men and women, like the others I have served with in combat, make for this country and the thought of how they are betrayed by politicians such as John Murtha.

There is no politician who has done more damage to the United States in the Global War on Terror than Congressman Murtha. His actions, whether resulting from incompetence, corruption, or cowardice, have done more to lead us toward political defeat in this war than the enemy could ever hope to accomplish by their own devices. Congressman Murtha’s calls for withdrawal of our forces and limiting the authority of the Commander-in-Chief in executing this war, plays directly into the hands of our enemy. He is  undermining our Soldiers in the fight and encourages the enemy to kill or maim a few more of our Soldiers and kill large numbers of Iraqi civilians on a weekly basis. The Islamic extremists, just like the communists in Vietnam, see his weakness of political resolve as the reason to keep fighting in spite of their military losses. He must be replaced with a candidate who understands the importance of an integrated political, military, and economic strategy that does not pit political ends against military and economic, but synchronizes and orchestrates them with the recognition of the imperative to achieve the victory that this war demands for the safety of our children and grandchildren.

I am entering this race because I believe it is imperative to our nation’s security and its future. The small economic sacrifice of leaving a secure, well-paying job, two years short of a guaranteed pension with health care for life, is nothing in comparison to the sacrifices of our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen who are on extended tours in active contact with an enemy and who are being undermined by politicians who are too corrupt, cowardly, or incompetent to recognize the nature of the war we are in. Surrender on the political, military, and economic fronts is not an option.”

One might ask if the monetary and emotional cost to my family was worth the run. In the end, we were able to hold one of the most corrupt politicians in American history accountable for undermining the military men and women serving in harm’s way on our behalf. By silencing the leading Democratic foil promoting premature withdrawal from Iraq, we were able to help prevent a Vietnam style political loss of the war and the Sunni–Shia genocide which surely would have followed – and made the killing fields of Cambodia pale in comparison.  As a family we can say it was well worth the costs.*

*When I initially wrote this article in 2012, ISIS had not yet emerged from the destabilization caused by the vacuum of Obama’s premature withdrawal from Iraq and undermining of regimes across the Middle East. There is no question of the brutality and intent of ISIS. As of now (September 4, 2014), it is simply a question of numbers as to when they will match the killing fields of Cambodia.

KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE

Sit down and write what you truly believe in. Make it principle centered instead of policy centered. This will help you craft policy positions based on them. It will help you to address issues as they arise and give you a framework of analysis and clarity of thought and reason in addressing them. It will help you to articulate your thoughts on the issues and to speak from a principled stand point, even when all the specifics of an issue are undefined. Here is one of the first entries I put on my website to explain what I believe. It survived the test of professional vetting and was the foundation from which all of my policy positions sprang. It was perhaps the most where can i buy cheap clomid pills of my statements.

“I am a Conservative.

I believe in the sovereignty and security of this one nation, under God.  I believe the primary role of government is to provide for the common defense and provide a legal framework which protects families and individual liberty.  I believe in rugged  individualism because individuals can make far better choices than government imposed solutions in providing for their families, protecting their households, choosing their doctors and health care plans, and deciding which teachers and schools are best for their children.  I believe prosperity is best ensured by what Adam Smith called the “invisible hand” of a natural, price driven economy.

I believe that we have the responsibility and obligation to control our borders and determine who is allowed to live and work in our country.

I believe that families are the foundation stone upon which all truly great societies are built.  I believe that imposed systems of wealth redistribution destroy families, produce a culture of dependence, and hurt everyone.  I believe in the sanctity of life and that life begins at conception. I believe in marriage between one man and one woman, that children should always be loved and sometimes be disciplined, and that all children in our school systems should be educated in English and taught the civic duties and responsibilities of citizenship and patriotism.

I believe in private property rights and that the death tax should be killed. I believe the Consumption or Fair Tax is the best and most equitable means to ensure all persons who participate in our economy, legally or illegally, pay their fair share and to reward those who build business or save and invest their money.

I believe in the right to bear arms and the right of self defense.  Gun control and gun free zones only ensure the victims are unarmed.

I believe that no one owes me anything just because I live and breathe. I believe we should all practice charity in some form or fashion, especially to those who are suffering and least fortunate, but it must be voluntary and spring from a spirit of altruism and love for your neighbor.

Finally, I believe there is room to acknowledge the role of our Creator in public life as stated in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.”

heard the gunshots taking the lives of the school administration staff
and the students in another classroom, she had very little freedom of
choice.  Her contractual responsibilities as a teacher
required her to safeguard the lives and health of the students she
taught. But it was her love for her students which required her to stand
between them and the evil coming through the doorway. She had very
limited options in accomplishing her duty and calling.

 Perhaps she could have
tried to save herself also by squeezing into a closet with some of her
students. But that would have left the shooter to start opening closets
and cabinets, or to randomly shoot through their doors.  Instead,
she hid her students, and stood in her room to face a perpetrator of
pure evil, completely at his mercy. When he demanded to know where her
students were, she told him they were in the gym.  Then he
killed her. It was only her wits that saved her students and caused her
killer to move down the hall, at the cost of her own life.  –Hers was a very special kind of bravery. buy clomid online uk

In the aftermath of the horror and
selfless sacrifice on the part of the teachers and administrators at
Sandy Hook Elementary School, there has been a constant barrage of calls
for further gun control. These range from a reintroduction of the
assault weapons ban to those who insist on repealing the 2nd
Amendment. This knee jerk reaction is highly misguided. At best, it will
not work. At worst, it threatens to set up a violent confrontation
between an overpowering federal bureaucracy and an armed citizenry who
view this as another attempt by the Obama Administration to disarm them
and further infringe on their rights.

But for discussion’s sake, let’s
assume a complete and total gun ban was successfully implemented. Instead
of shooting his way in, Adam Lanza could have simply driven his car
through the front door of the school and started his handiwork against
an unarmed staff with a samurai sword, long knife, machete, bush axe,
chain saw, roofing hammer, or any other assortment of yard or industrial
tools. He still would have had at least 12 minutes to perpetrate his
crimes against unarmed victims before armed police arrived.

On the other end of this spectrum,
there are states like Utah, where concealed carry laws extend to
classrooms and public buildings.  Teachers, administrators,
and parents who have concealed carry permits, carry weapons in the
schools on a regular basis. Oddly enough, there have been no mass school
shootings in Utah.

Perhaps the most digestible type of
program for most people would be a “Guardian” program like the one in
Harold, Texas. Teachers with concealed carry permits, after receiving
additional training, are authorized by the school to carry weapons on
the job.

 Let’s assume Victoria
Soto had a choice to be a participant in a concealed carry “Guardian”
program. She and any other teacher would have had the means to end the
spree seconds after it was initiated.  After hiding her
students, she could have taken a protected shooting position covering
the door way, from where she could accurately engage anyone coming
through the door to harm her kids. She would have had the power and
means to stop the shooter dead.

There are many details we have yet to
learn about the Sandy Hook shooting. But the one thing we do know is
that a 27 year old teacher exhibited great courage and poise when facing
death.  That same sense of responsibility she showed in
facing an armed assailant would also made her highly responsible in
carrying and using a firearm in the presence of children.

Whatever Victoria Soto’s feelings about guns were, she should have had the choice on whether or not to carry one.

Liberals love to talk about a woman’s
right to choose. But they would continue to deny the Victoria Sotos of
the world the freedom of choice on how to protect themselves and the
lives and health of the students they love.
